Oscar-Nominated Star Diane Ladd, Famed For Her Performance in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Passes Away at Age 89.

This award-nominated performer Diane Ladd has died 89 years old.

This actress, with roles featured National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, died at her home at her Ojai, California home. Her passing was revealed in a statement by her offspring, Oscar-winning actor Laura Dern.

Dern, who performed alongside her mom in several movies like Wild at Heart, described her as “my amazing hero plus my profound gift being my mom”, stating that she was at her bedside when she passed.

“She was the most wonderful daughter, mother, grandmother, performer, creative along with caring individual that felt like a dream come true,” she expressed. “We were lucky to have her. Her spirit soars with angels.”

Initial Roles and Rise to Fame

Her initial acting years saw supporting roles on television series including Perry Mason while the 1970s featured her performing with the legendary Jack Nicholson in the classic Chinatown.

During that year, the year 1974, she performed with Ellen Burstyn in the Martin Scorsese acclaimed dramatic comedy Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. The performance earned Ladd her first Oscar nomination as best supporting actress.

Subsequent Years

During the eighties, she appeared in crime thriller Black Widow, a suspense story as well as comedy sequel Christmas Vacation and appeared on Alice, a television series inspired by her earlier movie.

During the next ten years, she earned an additional supporting actress Academy Award nomination for her performance in the David Lynch film the movie Wild at Heart in which she portrayed the parent of her biological child the character played by Dern. A year later she received an additional nod for her role in the film Rambling Rose that also featured her daughter.

“This movie that the late Princess Diana chose as her absolutely favorite, and she brought Laura and I to the UK for a premiere and a celebration dedicated to us,” Ladd said about the film Rambling Rose. “And she sat between us, grasping our hands, with tears, watching us perform.”

That decade included parts in the comedy Cemetery Club joining her again with Burstyn, Primary Colors, a satirical film, featuring John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne the movie Citizen Ruth where she played Dern’s mother another time. The decade also earned her TV award nominations for roles in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, the show Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel.

Partnerships with Her Daughter

She kept appearing with her daughter in dramatic comedies Daddy and Them, a movie, the David Lynch project Inland Empire, a surreal film and White’s satirical show Enlightened, a TV series. She also appeared alongside actress Sandra Bullock in the film 28 Days, Sir Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian, a film plus Jennifer Lawrence in the film Joy.

Her more recent television parts consisted of Ray Donovan plus Young Sheldon.

Filmmaking Ventures

Ladd also wrote and oversaw the comedy Mrs Munck, a film featuring her and former husband Bruce Dern. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she noted. “It was a privilege to guide him on a project. In fact, I am the sole female in history to helm a film with her ex. I make a joke: ‘I say ladies, should you desire retribution, helm a movie with your ex.’ However, I’m joking.”

Family Ties

Ladd was also the third cousin of playwright Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a significant impact throughout my life”.

During 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with a respiratory illness and told her life expectancy was six months yet she recovered completely once her daughter moved her to a different hospital.

“When you use your pain and prevent it from festering similar to a wound, rather utilize it to explore, to illuminate the way for you and those around, then you are winning,” Ladd expressed.
