Eurovision Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – However It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

An recent term came to light several months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is unique to Gaza, as stated by doctors such as paediatricians. Normally, it is unusual for doctors to treat a minor who has lost their entire family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy in many doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.

A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

The Gaza Strip continues to be hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs assert that violations are continuing. The Israeli government disputes these claims, just as it refutes everything it is implicated in. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its declared purpose of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, apparently, is what global togetherness manifests as.

Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. A competition that was originally built on peace has now become a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
