Aaron Rai Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Playoff Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer displayed remarkable nerve to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a tense playoff following a rollercoaster last day of competition.
Rai sank a decisive birdie putt from just over eight feet to seal the victory, echoing his only previous Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a play-off victory over the same opponent.
Final Round Drama
The champion entered the last day with a one-shot advantage over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger edged a stroke clear with two holes remaining after a birdie on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the last green.
Playoff Climax
That set up a playoff at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even more person. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” stated Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to describe at the moment how it feels. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
Notable Contenders
Rory McIlroy found himself a bit too far to make up, coming up one shot behind in a shared third place with the Dane, after a spectacular 62 final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and an eagle.
Højgaard fired six birdies of his as well, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were hit by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an excellent final-round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australian Hillier.
